It was fun to read the morning papers today, (somehow we happen to receive 4 different news papers; 3 in English and 1 in my mother tongue 'Bengali')
In one of the dailies there were these two topics on the same page; one dealt with the issue of how English language has become one of the important medium to get a ticket to India's new economic boom and the other about this 65 year lady who found a traditional art that dramatizes social and familial issues and reinvented the same to become the first female performer of this art.
It was fascinating to observe how a global language can be seen as the passport to a better world while a local one can become a creative outlet and way to communicate and form a sisterhood of sorts that helps the members tide over shackles of conventions.
I believe it is important to know your mother tongue to learn any other language and express oneself through it.
Any language that we learn and comprehend becomes a gateway to a world unknown
